Switch

Network switches are mainly the key building blocks of a network.

What is a switch?

A switch is like a traffic controller for computer networks. It directs data traffic, making sure that information gets to the right place without colliding with other data.

Switches work by using the unique addresses of connected devices called the MAC address to route data through the network. They can process and forward data at lightning speeds, making them a crucial component of modern computer networks.

How does it work?

Computers connected to each other with a switch together form what we call a “computer network”. A switch is used to connect different devices together.

Switches create connections between devices like computers, printers, and wireless access points. Different models of network switches support numbers of connected devices.

Network switches have several ports where you can plug in multiple devices. Once plugged in, the switch assigns a MAC address to each machine.

When HIVE was first infected, it stopped for a second. It was the first time that the humming of the machines was silenced on Earth for over a half millennia. However, with thunderous might, they rebooted, emitting a dark red light that replaced the bright white light it used to have before. - Journals of Order of Epoch, 2254 Anno Domini

The switch is a Layer 2 device that allows more than one computer to connect to each another.

A starship can have multiple switches and many networks inside. You can use ethernet computers to connect to computers on switch ports. Switch knows which port each connected device is located using a kind of address book it.
